Plot
Sant Tukaram portrays the inspiring life of 17th-century saint-poet Tukaram Maharaj, whose devotional verses and philosophy shaped the Bhakti movement in Maharashtra. The film begins with Tukaram’s humble childhood in Dehu, where he experiences hardships of famine, poverty, and personal loss, including the deaths of close family members. These tragedies transform his worldview, pushing him away from material pursuits toward spiritual reflection. Haunted by questions of suffering and inequality, Tukaram begins composing heartfelt abhangs—poems dedicated to Lord Vithoba—that express devotion, compassion, and the essence of humanity. His simple yet profound verses resonate with farmers, laborers, and common folk, spreading a message of love and equality that defies rigid caste hierarchies. As his following grows, Tukaram’s egalitarian teachings draw the ire of orthodox Brahmins, who accuse him of challenging tradition and disrupting social order. He faces ridicule, persecution, and attempts to silence his voice, yet his unwavering devotion and humility win over hearts. The narrative highlights his deep bond with his wife Avalai, who supports him through trials, and his role as a reformer who emphasized faith over ritual. The film culminates with Tukaram’s spiritual ascent, symbolizing his transcendence from earthly struggles into divine immortality, leaving behind a legacy of devotion, reform, and timeless poetry.
